The Australian Cattle Dog, or Heeler, is a harder dog in almost every sense. Terrier Group Training Challenges
Terriers were bred to find, pursue, and kill vermin, often working underground in confined spaces without any handler supervision or guidance. These are not personality flaws. They are precisely the qualities that made terriers effective at their intended work. The trainer who approaches a Jack Russell Terrier, a Border Terrier, or a Scottish Terrier with the protocols optimised for a Labrador will quickly find that the terrier has more stamina for non-compliance than the trainer has for compliance. Terriers win staring contests. They outlast punishment. They will dig under fences for days. They will repeat a behaviour a thousand times if the single reinforcement it has produced in the past felt worth it. That persistence needs to be redirected, not confronted.
What works with terriers is game-based training that engages their prey drive in a controlled structure. Tug games with rules are extremely effective: the terrier gets to bite, carry, and shake the toy, which satisfies deep instinctive drives, and the rules of the game build impulse control and compliance simultaneously. Food motivation varies more by individual in the terrier group than in most working breeds; some Jack Russells are highly food motivated, while others will leave premium treats untouched during a training session if there is anything interesting happening within fifty metres. A Beagle that has earned its meals by finding hidden food puzzles around the garden is a Beagle that has associated working with its handler as the most reliably rewarding activity available, which is exactly the associative history you need before asking for behaviours that require the dog to override its primary sensory input.
Sighthounds — Greyhounds, Whippets, Salukis, Afghan Hounds — present a different profile. They are visually triggered rather than olfactorily triggered, and their prey drive is expressed through explosive pursuit rather than sustained tracking. They tend to have lower food motivation than scent hounds, are often sensitive and easily overwhelmed in high-intensity training environments, and require quiet, positive sessions with a handler who understands that their independence is not a training failure but a breed characteristic. Sighthounds off-lead in unsecured areas is almost universally a liability; their speed once a visual prey trigger fires is sufficient to carry them out of recall range in seconds.
Recall training for any hound group member should begin in minimal distraction environments, be built slowly through systematic proofing, and should always be conditioned to produce an immediate orientation response to the recall cue before distance is added. Use the highest-value reinforcer in your hierarchy for every recall during the building phase, use it reliably for years before transitioning to a variable schedule, and never call the dog for something unpleasant. Toy Breeds: Size vs Drive

None of these behaviours have anything to do with size. They are all the product of insufficient training and insufficient socialisation in puppies that were assumed to be low-risk and therefore given less attention to their behavioural development.
Chihuahuas, Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, Maltese, and their relatives are all entirely trainable to a high standard using exactly the same principles applied to large breeds. Many of them are extremely food motivated, which makes reinforcement-based training efficient. Their smaller working memories and shorter attention spans require shorter sessions, but the learning mechanics are identical. The mistake trainers make is not applying the rules consistently because the dog's small size creates an illusion of low stakes. A Chihuahua that snaps at visitors is a management problem. Toy breeds also frequently suffer from being carried, which deprives them of the exposure to varied ground surfaces, sounds, and social experiences that physical locomotion provides. A small dog that has always been carried at human eye height has a very different sensory and social history than one that has walked the same environments on its own legs. Some toy breeds carry genuine working instincts scaled down from larger relatives. Miniature Schnauzers are terriers in all but proportion. Two myths dominate: that they are inherently dangerous to humans, and that they are too driven and stubborn to train reliably. Both are inaccurate and both do serious harm to the dogs and their owners.
Historically, dogs used in organised fighting were selected with extreme care for human-directed behaviour. A dog that bit its handler could not be worked safely, so generations of breeding specifically maintained a trait called gameness, meaning tenacious willingness to engage with another dog, while simultaneously maintaining exceptional softness and handler focus toward people. The result is a dog that is deeply human-oriented, highly touch-motivated, and in most individuals very people-friendly. Dog-directed reactivity, which does occur at higher rates in some bull breeds, is a separate issue from human aggression and should not be conflated with it.
Training bully breeds is efficient for handlers who understand their specific motivational profile. Many bull breeds are extremely play-motivated, highly touch-motivated, and genuinely enthusiastic training partners when the sessions are engaging and the relationship is strong. Their pain tolerance means that aversive corrections have even less effect than in most breeds; a prong collar correction that would deter a soft dog produces escalating defiance in a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The specific training priority for bull breeds that show dog-directed reactivity is teaching a reliable behavioural interrupt and look-at-me cue that can be used before the dog crosses its arousal threshold. Counter-conditioning to the sight of other dogs, building distance-based positive associations before attempting proximity-based work, and management with appropriate containment during the building phase are the practical steps. Expecting a bull breed with established dog-directed reactivity to be reliable off-lead in areas with unknown dogs before extensive proofing is unrealistic regardless of the training method used.
Nordic Breeds: Independence vs Obedience
Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, Akitas, Chow Chows, and related spitz breeds share a characteristic that separates them from most working group breeds: they were developed for tasks that required sustained independent operation rather than close handler collaboration. A sled team running hundred-mile races in Arctic conditions does not check in with a handler. A Malamute pulling freight through a blizzard makes its own decisions. The cooperation with humans that defines Labradors and Golden Retrievers was not the primary selection pressure in these breeds, and it shows in their training profiles.
Nordic breeds frequently have moderate to low food motivation relative to environmental reinforcers, particularly in outdoor settings. They are not biddable in the sense that Labs are; they will comply with known cues when they choose to, and their compliance rate drops meaningfully in novel environments, high-distraction contexts, and situations where the dog's own assessment of the risk-benefit ratio differs from the handler's. This frustrates owners who mistake it for stubbornness or stupidity. Nordic breeds are not stupid. They have a different cost-benefit architecture for compliance, built around their history as autonomous working animals.
Building obedience with a Husky or Malamute requires patience with a long acquisition timeline, particularly for recall and any behaviour that requires overriding the dog's own environmental assessment. The relationship between the handler and a Nordic breed is more genuinely earned than in most other breed groups. Sessions must be kept short, criteria must progress, and the reinforcers used must genuinely outcompete the environment rather than merely being present alongside it. Many Husky owners find that the highest-value reinforcer they have is the opportunity to run, and attaching training compliance as a prerequisite to the run produces faster results than any food-based approach.
Recall with Nordic breeds is treated honestly in the working-dog community: it is never considered fully reliable without an enclosed environment or long-line management. Their prey drive, combined with their speed and their tendency to make independent environmental assessments, means that a Husky in an open area will make its own decision about whether returning to the handler is the most interesting option available. Training the best possible recall, managing with containment in high-risk situations, and accepting this as a breed characteristic rather than a training failure is the realistic approach.
Sporting Group Versatility
The sporting group encompasses some of the most training-versatile breeds in existence: Spaniels, Setters, Pointers, and the retriever breeds not already covered. What unites them is that they were developed to work in close partnership with a human hunter, handling different parts of a coordinated hunting sequence, and their training profiles reflect that deep history of human collaboration. Spaniels flush and retrieve. Setters and Pointers locate and indicate. All of them require a dog that maintains close spatial relationship with the handler, responds to directional cues, and delivers game without damage, and all of those requirements produced dogs that are highly handler-attentive, moderately to highly food motivated, and generally very trainable.
English Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels are among the most energetic of the sporting group and carry a level of drive that owners consistently underestimate. Working-line Springers in particular are extremely high-drive, high-energy dogs that require hours of daily exercise and active mental engagement. Show-line Spaniels are calmer, but even they have significant exercise requirements. Both lines respond extremely well to positive reinforcement with food and retrieve games, are generally willing to work at a high pace, and benefit strongly from nose-work activities that engage their hunting instinct constructively.
Vizslas and Weimaraners represent the continental hunting breeds and carry an additional dimension that many owners are surprised by: an intensity of human attachment that borders on separation anxiety in dogs that are not properly prepared for solitude. Both breeds were developed as all-day hunting companions that worked at the hunter's heel and were never far from human contact. The result is a dog that is extremely bonded to its owner, extremely enthusiastic in training, and extremely distressed when left alone. Attempting to run the same dog on the fast-paced, high-intensity reinforcement protocol used for a Belgian Malinois will produce an overwhelmed dog that shuts down.
High-drive dogs, including most working-line shepherds, sport breeds, and terriers, need reinforcement that matches and channels their drive level rather than calming it down. Tug games, thrown toys, running with the handler, and any reinforcement sequence that involves movement and physical engagement are more effective with these dogs than calm food delivery.
